Agents Expressed by Prepositionless Instrumental Modifying Czech Nouns Derived from Intransitive Verbs
نویسنده
چکیده
The present paper aims to provide corpus-based description of Czech deverbal nouns that allow for modification by Agent expressed by prepositionless instrumental, A1(Ins). As the starting point we give frequency data of selected nouns derived from transitive verbs. Then we focus on nouns derived from intransitive verbs and show that modification by A1(Ins) is possible not only with nouns derived from verbs that can be passivized, but also with nouns the source verbs of which cannot be changed to passive. The latter issue represents the most contributive finding of the paper; it concerns especially nouns derived from reflexive verbs, both transitive and intransitive. We also improve the up-to-now description by taking into consideration not only Czech nouns derived from verbs by productive means (e.g. domlouvání ‘talking’) but also the non-productively derived ones (e.g. domluva ‘caution’), mostly left aside. Finally, the corpus material also gives an evidence for usage of theoretically ungrammatical constructions in which the second complementation (A2) is omitted on the surface and only A1(Ins) is expressed, e.g. vyhrožování zaměstnavatelem ‘threatening by the employer’, domluva strážníky ‘caution by police officers’; the corpus-based examples lead to the revision of the statement about ungrammaticality of such constructions.

متن کاملAcquisition and loss of nouns and verbs: parallel or divergent patterns?
This paper investigates a possible correspondence between the acquisition and breakdown of the ability to name nouns, verbs and their subcategories. The postulation of a universal developmental sequence, according to which children are predisposed to acquire nouns before verbs, has been challenged by cross-linguistic studies. In the case of acquired language loss in adults, the traditional assu...
متن کاملSemantic context influences memory for verbs more than memory for nouns.
Three experiments revealed that memory for verbs is more dependent on semantic context than is memory for nouns. The participants in Experiment 1 were asked to remember either nouns or verbs from intransitive sentences. A recognition test included verbatim sentences, sentences with an old noun and a new verb, sentences with an old verb and a new noun, and entirely new sentences. Memory for verb...
متن کاملDeveloping a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity
Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...
